Escape the Costly Trap: Secure Your Online Accounts Without SMS 2FA

In today's interconnected world, many people rely on two-factor authentication (2FA) through SMS or voice calls to secure their online accounts. However, receiving these verification codes can be challenging if you are traveling abroad or if communication costs are high. Thankfully, there are alternative methods to ensure secure access to your accounts without relying on costly text messages or voice calls.

Leverage App-Based Two-Factor Authentication

To enhance account security without relying on SMS, consider an app-based two-factor authentication method. Most services that offer SMS-based 2FA also support app-based options like Google Authenticator or Apple’s Passwords app. Look for a setting within the security tab on the account's website to enable this feature. For instance, when accessing Google Account settings, you have the option to add a passkey, use a hardware security key, or set up an Authenticator app. Such apps use a time-based one-time password (TOTP) to generate verification codes in sync with the server, ensuring a seamless login process without SMS.

Apple simplifies this process with its Passwords app, allowing you to add codes via QR codes. If unavailable, you can manually input shared secret text from the service into the Passwords app to activate 2FA. By switching to app-based authentication, you're free from relying on SMS or voice calls, ensuring secure account access anywhere.

You can use a QR Code to add a verification code (left) or copy the secret shared text and paste that into Passwords (right) or other apps that support TOTP.

Utilize Google Voice for SMS and Calls

For those who frequently face issues with SMS-based 2FA codes, Google Voice is an excellent alternative. Google Voice provides a free, legitimate phone number that can be used to send and receive calls and SMS messages. Importantly, there are no costs for messages or calls originating from and to the U.S. and Canada, making it an ideal choice while traveling or in areas with high communication fees.

When setting up account verification, you might have the option of adding a Google Voice number as your SMS reception method. However, some institutions might restrict text delivery to Google Voice numbers. To increase success rates, use Google Voice specifically for platforms that support it. To ensure you never miss a code, you can forward incoming texts from Google Voice to your regular email by changing the settings at voice.google.com. This option often provides swift delivery of texts right to your inbox.
